Accuracy Standards & Geographic Limitations
An honest and transparent look at how geographic tools calculate values, what affects precision, and what our tools should not be used for.
General Geographic Disclaimer
GEO MAP TOOLS calculations are designed for estimation, preliminary planning, education, and general spatial utility. They do NOT constitute a legal land survey, a title deed measurement, certified engineering data, or official aviation/maritime navigational guidance.
9 Factors Affecting Geographic Accuracy
Calculations rely on coordinate positions provided by user input or OpenStreetMap contributor datasets. Outdated or crowd-tagged points will affect locality identification.
Mobile devices with active GPS chips achieve accuracy within 5–20 meters. Laptops relying on Wi-Fi positioning or cellular IP addresses can be off by 500 meters to several kilometers.
Inputting 2 decimal places gives resolution of ~1.1 km. 4 decimal places gives ~11 meters. 6 decimal places resolves down to ~0.11 meters. Truncated inputs directly limit output accuracy.
We use the standard WGS 84 mean volumetric sphere (R = 6,371 km). Earth's true shape is an oblate ellipsoid with a ~21 km difference between equator and poles, causing up to ~0.3%–0.5% variance.
All area and distance formulas calculate 2D horizontal surface projections along the sea-level datum. Steep mountain terrain has greater actual ground surface area than its horizontal projection.
Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) stretches distances away from the equator on screen. While our calculations bypass screen pixels and evaluate in true coordinates, visual drawing on screen is subject to tile pixel resolution.
Address search uses Nominatim, which often interpolates house numbers along street centerlines rather than pinpointing exact parcel building centroids.
City, municipal, and postal code boundaries can diverge. A mailing address ZIP code may not align with an incorporated city border.
For tools like the Map Area Calculator, your accuracy is directly bounded by how precisely you click the corners of a property or field on the satellite or street map.
Prohibited Use Cases (What Tools Must NOT Be Used For)
- Legal Boundary Disputes: Never present GEO MAP TOOLS screenshots, coordinates, or acreage calculations in a court of law or property line dispute. Official boundary determinations require a licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) with calibrated total stations and GNSS base stations.
- Real Estate Conveyancing & Deeds: Land contracts, mortgage filings, and property deeds require legal descriptions stamped by accredited surveying authorities.
- Aviation & Marine Navigation: Never use our straight-line distance, bearing, or radius calculators for in-flight routing or sea charting. Certified navigation requires certified avionics, nautical charts, magnetic variation corrections, and Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) compliance.
- Life-Safety Emergency Dispatch: Do not rely on reverse-city lookup for 911/112 emergency calls. Emergency services use carrier-grade E911 phase II cellular triangulation.
When Should You Hire a Professional Surveyor?
If you are buying or selling real property, erecting a fence, building a permanent structure, installing utility lines, or dividing a parcel of land, you should hire a licensed professional surveyor. Licensed surveyors reference physical monuments in the ground, title deeds, and geodetic control networks that no satellite map website can replace.
